Although many prescription drugs and some over the counter medications may cause hair loss, it's rarely permanent and usually stops when treatment ends.

Don't attempt to self-diagnose, or stop any medication that you think is causing the problem. Discuss the situation with your doctor.

Read everything you can about every medication that's prescribed for you. If it seems to be a common hair loss cause, ask if you can have an alternative drug.

You can usually expect your locks to be back to their former glory within a few months of stopping your medication.

Ms. Toni, I too was diagnosed with both forms of alopecia. My diagnoses was a result of certain hair products and hair styles. I went to a dermatologist and a regime/scalp injections were used and my scalp didn’t respond to years of treatment. A year later a car accident caused me to have to take several different pain medicines and as a result handfuls of hair came out. My scalp was literally bald and smooth to the touch. It appeared that the follicles were completely I had to cover my scalp using hair tracks. My hairstylist has been very patient and helpful in covering up my bald patches predominately on the top and side of my head. She has basically made me a toupee that is sewn into a swirled braid with the little hair I have on top. (covered by a hairnet to protect my hair from track damage. ) The track hair is attached by the hairnet and looks great . It’s been 6-8 years of dealing with this condition that I finally decided to try essential oil’s . I did my research and eventually went to my local vitamin store and bought a carrier oil such as almond oil, jojoba oil or castor oil and mixed it with 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil, and Rosemary. After 6+ years of total boldness hair began to grow after three months of use . I wore a wig that my stylist made for me during this the hair is thin however it’s still hair. Today as I search the Internet for more ideas I’ve decided to add Cedar wood oil also . With your child being so young I would contact your dermatologist to make sure that my concoction won’t be too strong for her scalp. ( I believe it is) Never use the oils without a carrier oil. I pray that this is helpful to you as I know this can be very depressing , discouraging and embarrassing.

One technique may help prevent hair loss during chemotherapy. It's called scalp hypothermia , and it involves placing ice packs on the scalp a few minutes before -- and for about a half-hour after -- chemotherapy treatment. Cooling the scalp reduces blood flow to the hair follicles, making it harder for the chemotherapy drugs to get into the follicular cells. Cooling also reduces biochemical activity, making the hair follicles less susceptible to damage from chemotherapy drugs. One concern with this technique is the risk of cancer recurrence in the scalp, as perhaps this area did not receive the full dose of medication due to cooling vasoconstriction.

You have no real experience with homeopathy yet you know it doesn’t work… can be dangerous… firstly, certainly no pharmaceuticals have proven dangerous have they….?! Homeopathy works amazingly well when you get the right remedy… almost instantaneously… but getting the right remedy is the key… I’ve been studying it for 20 years and finally understand it, although over the years have seen many miracles…OCD healed, kidney stones disappear rapidly w/o passing, flu gone, on and on and on I could tell of wonderful things I’ve seen… So quit your lying… and I know you’re a liar because if you had an ounce of truth in you …you would admit that pharmaceuticals have many side effects and dangers…just listen to the TV commercials… how anyone can take them w/the long list of dangers is ridiculous when homeopathy is safe and miraculous… why don’t you try some… maybe you’ll like it

Many commonly prescribed prescription drugs can cause temporary hair loss, trigger the onset of male and female pattern baldness, and even cause permanent hair loss. Note that the drugs listed here do not include those used in chemotherapy and radiation for cancer treatment.

Your doctor may not mention hair loss as a side effect of some drugs, so don't forget to do your own research and read the drug manufacturer's complete warnings. Your pharmacist can provide you with this information even before you fill a prescription.

Many pill and medication guidebooks (sold in bookstores and pharmacies) are also excellent sources of complete information about prescription drugs. If your doctor prescribes any of the following drugs, ask if one that does not have hair loss as a possible side effect can be substituted.

The drugs are listed by category, according to the conditions they treat, then by brand name first, followed by the drug's generic name in parentheses. In some categories, individual drugs are not listed. For these conditions, you will want to discuss the possibility of hair loss as a side effect of using any of the drugs that treat that particular condition, since many do contribute to hair loss.
